29-year-old Mario Cruz nearly died when he was shot in the chest by a robber who climbed through the drive-thru window at a Dallas restaurant.

The bullet ricocheted through Mario’s chest. It left a massive hole in this heart and damaged several other vital organs. His heart stopped several times. Mario’s trauma surgeon Jennifer Burris, MD, held his heart in her hand to stop the bleeding.

The trauma team at Methodist Dallas Medical Center went to work and somehow saved Mario’s life. His four young children now have their father back.
